Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition in which the heart's function as a pump is inadequate to deliver oxygen rich blood to the body. Congestive heart failure can be caused by:
- diseases that weaken the heart muscle,
- diseases that cause stiffening of the heart muscles, or
- diseases that increase oxygen demand by the body tissue beyond the capability of the heart to deliver adequate oxygen-rich blood.
Symptoms may notice first:
- fatigue
- swelling in your ankles, feet, and legs
- weight gain
- increased need to urinate, especially at night
- irregular heartbeat
- a cough that develops from congested lungs
- wheezing
Symptoms that indicate a severe heart condition that requires immediate medical attention:
- chest pain that radiates through the upper body (this can also be a sign of a heart attack)
- rapid breathing
- skin that appears blue (from lack of oxygen in your lungs)
- fainting
