Nanda Nursing Diagnosis for Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition in which the heart's function as a pump is inadequate to deliver oxygen rich blood to the body. Congestive heart failure can be caused by:
  • diseases that weaken the heart muscle,
  • diseases that cause stiffening of the heart muscles, or
  • diseases that increase oxygen demand by the body tissue beyond the capability of the heart to deliver adequate oxygen-rich blood.

Symptoms may notice first:
  • fatigue
  • swelling in your ankles, feet, and legs
  • weight gain
  • increased need to urinate, especially at night
Symptoms that indicate condition has worsened:
  • irregular heartbeat
  • a cough that develops from congested lungs
  • wheezing

Symptoms that indicate a severe heart condition that requires immediate medical attention:
  • chest pain that radiates through the upper body (this can also be a sign of a heart attack)
  • rapid breathing
  • skin that appears blue (from lack of oxygen in your lungs)
  • fainting
